Heck, as far as we know, anti-grav or at least magnetic levitation might not be too far off. We seem to be able to accept that lightning ball shooters (PPCs), walking robots that are more durrable than anything (battlemechs being so much tougher than tanks), cannons that shoot monster caliber guns slightly farther than a bowling alley is long (The inverse of AC damage to range), tiny man made stars powering everything, and other high sci-fi/space opera tripe but immediately throw away the idea that perhaps the 'hover tanks' might not actually be hovercrafts in a traditional sense that we know of them today but more akin to (but lacking some of the advances that will come in time over the next 3 millennia between BT and RL) grav tanks (Still lacking the re-entry ability and such) and should actually be a bit more capable than the current anemic mess that hovers are. with modern day problems and limitations (especially these days).

Nope, they are just modern day hovercraft. The physics behind them get tossed right out the window with the idea that they are able to generate enough lift to act as a hover craft without any form of skirt but lack the ability to jump or even a limited form of altitude control to perform pop up attacks. The post 3026 hovercraft might as well be grav tanks honestly.
